Willkommen in der Stadt die niemals schläft. Wir zumindest, schlafen wie zwei Murmeltiere. Seit Tagen bekommen wir von allen Seiten gute Tipps und Ratschläge was es alles so zu tun gibt.  Danke nochmals an alle. Die Liste an „to do’s“ ist also ziemlich lange.

Erst beim Verlassen des Hotels realisieren wir, wie kalt es überhaupt ist. Mit allem Bekleidet was unser Koffer her gibt begeben wir uns auf den Weg über die Brooklyn Bridge nach Manhatten. Unsere Tour führt weiter über Chinatown nach Little Italy, zum Shopping um die Blöcke von Soho, auf den Broadway und dann die fifth Avenue hoch. Vom Rockefeller Center bestaunen wir die Aussicht über die Beton Giganten, die Stimmung ist Atemberaubend doch leider auch die Temperatur. Bereits nach knappen 10 Minuten verlassen wir schlotternd das Aussichtsdeck. Als Abschluss schauen wir noch am Time Square vorbei, wo man vor lauter Leuchtschriften und Werbespots gar nicht mehr weiss, wo man hinschauen soll. Nach fast 12 Stunden Dauerlaufen und Frieren sind wir froh in ein gemütliches Hotelzimmer zurück zu kehren.

Bereits beim Aufstehen, macht sich ein leichter Muskelkater bemerkbar. 10:30 und das MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) öffnet seine Tore. Unter den ersten Betreten wir das 5 stöckige Gebäude. Ganz interessant, mal Life vor einem der bekannten Gemälde von Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh oder Rousseu zu stehen. Nehmen wir nur mal an, wir müssten uns für ein Gemälde entscheiden, Picasso wäre eindeutig unser Favorit. Die Tim Burton Ausstellung ist gesteckt voll. Unter ständigem Körperkontakt schlängeln wir uns durch die faszinierende Welt aus Monstern, Aliens und anderen wilden Kreaturen. Nach ungefähr drei Stunden erreichen wir die Grenze unserer Aufnahmefähigkeit, die Gänge sind voll und der 5 Stock ist erreicht, Zeit für einen Starbucks Caffee. Beeindruckt und gleichzeitig erschlagen verlassen wir das Museum.

Der Besuch des Central Park wird leider wegen Zähneklappern gestrichen. Dann doch die nächste Gallerie, diesmal das International Center of Photography. Leider war komplettes Fotografie verbot, so könnten wir leider keine Eindrücke mit Euch teielen. Die Gallerie ist auf jeden Fall ein Besuch wert.

Nach einem kurzen Shopping Abstecher nach Soho begeben wir uns auch wieder zurück in unsere warme Bleibe.

Für den letzten Tag haben wir uns Brooklyn vorgenommen. Zu Fuss gehen wir durch Downtown, DUMBO und Brooklyn Heights. Die uns Empfohlenden Strassen sind jedoch Menschenleer, scheint so als hätte die Kälte einige Leute vertrieben…. dafür müssen wir wohl mal im Sommer zurückkehren.

Die letzten Einkäufe werden in die Koffer verpackt und schon steht das Taxi da. Wir wissen zwar, dass es jetzt nach Hause geht, realisieren es aber noch nicht wirklich. New York – Madrid – München. Unser Freund Michi, seine Tochter Luna und Mamma Hafen erwarten uns am Flughafen. Ein herzliches Wiedersehen….. wie sich der Rest an fühlt schreiben wir Euch in unserer nächsten und letzten News…. bleibt dran.

It’s fairly quiet at when we arrive at JFK airport New York arround midnight. We accept the offer of a quite shady taxi driver thinking, well.. we’ve been travelling trough all of Central America and had no troubbes so why should it start now. He kept his word and dropped us in downtown Brooklyn at the NU Hotel.

Welcome to the city that never sleeps. At least we did the day of our arrival… Since we asked you all for good hints on our page, we got plenty of information what to do, even to much for the little time. Thanks again to all of you.

Only at the first time we leave the hotel in the morning we realize how cold it is. After putting on all cloths we find we start our city walk over the brooklyn bridge to Manhatten. We visit Chinatown, followed by little Italy and Soho who offers some good shopping opportunities and nice caffees to warm up. We continue along the broadway and up the 5th avenue. As breathtaking the outlook of Rockefeller is, after less then 10 minutes we have to leave the upper deck because of the cold. To finish the day we check out the huge screens and light show at Time Square before returning to our  relaxed hotel after 12 hours of walking around town and freezing.

Already by getting up in the morning we feel the muscle pain in the legs. 10:30, MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) opens their doors. We’re with the first people to get into the 5 storie building. Quite interesting to get to see life some of the works of the most famous artists in human history like Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh and Rousseau. Well, if we would ever have to decide between one of their artworks we’d take a Picasso. The special Tim Burton exhebition is packed. Under constant body contact we sneak our way past funny looking monsters, aliens and all kind of creatures. After allmost three hours we arrive at the limit of our absorbing capacity, time for a coffee at Starbucks. We leave the museum impressed and likewise exhausted.

We cancel the central park because it’s just to f… cold. That’s for next time when we’re here in summer. Not to far from MOMA we find the International Center of Photography. Unfortunatelly it was not allowed to take pictures, so we can’t share this experiance with you. The gallery is deffinetely worth a visit. After a short Soho shopping stop we get back to the hotel.

The last day’s programm is Brooklyn. We walk through DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights. The places we where told to visit and the streets are empty, seams like the cold temperatures banished all peaople… we’ll have to get back in summer  to get the real Brooklyn experiance.

By the time we pack the few things we shopped the taxi is already waiting in front of the door. We know, it’s going home now but it will take some more days to realy realize our journey is finished. New York – Madrid – München. Our friend Michel is waiting for us at the Munich Airport, accompanied  by his little doughter Luna and Kathrins Mom. A cordial welcome…. and we’ll tell you how everything feels at home in our next and final news… we’re back soon….

Nun ist es soweit, Rückreise nach San Jose ist angesagt. Julia und Holger, Frida’s neue Adoptiveltern erwarten uns am Flughafen. Doch einmal mehr, läuft es nicht so wir uns das ausgemalt haben und auf dem Weg dahin versagen die Bremsen. Die restliche Strecke nach Alajuela fahren wir im Abschleppwagen. Frida wird beim Mechaniker abgesetzt und wir warten mit unseren eigenen Koffern auf die Besucher. Es ist bereits das dritte Wiedersehen auf unserer Reise und wie immer gibt es wieder einen Haufen zu erzählen.

Nach kurzer Ersatzteil Suche und zwei Stunden schrauben ist Frida wieder wohlauf. Als nächstes steht der Zoll auf der „to do“ Liste. Das Zertifikat für die temporäre Einfuhr des Wagens muss auf Julia und Holger überschrieben werden. Sollte, laut Zollbeamter bei der Einreise kein Problem sein…..  falsch gedacht. Ziemlich frustriert und kurzzeitig etwas verzweifelt verlassen wir das Zollgebäude am Flughafen, nachdem uns der höchst anwesender Beamte nicht weiter helfen kann. Unsere letzte Chance ist, an die Grenze nach Nicaragua zurück zu fahren wo es einfach gehen sollte. Janu, doch keine zwei Tage am Stand, sondern ein Roadtrip durchs halbe Land. Einmal an der Grenze angekommen läuft alles wie geschmiert. Es dauert keine halbe Stunde und wir halten die neuen Papiere in der Hand. Ein grosser Stein fällt uns vom Herzen und die Zeit reicht sogar noch für einen kleinen Abstecher an den Strand von Avellanas in der Nähe von Tamarindo. Das Meer zeigt sich leider von seiner ruhigsten Seite aber trotzdem ist es nochmals schön ins Wasser zu hüpfen.

Die Shorts und T-Shirts werden eingepackt, die durchgelatschten Flip Flops weggeschmissen, lange Hosen, Longsleeves, Jacken, Schuhe und Socken sind nach langer Zeit wieder angesagt. Wir nehmen Abschied von Frida, Julia und Holger und Wünschen den dreien eine genau so schöne, vielseitige und erlebnisreiche Zeit auf der Rückreise nach Baja.

Uns erwarten New York und der Winter.

Poseidon sends more waves for us and the days are flying past. We meet Derek and Karl in the water, two nice American who are both taking a little time out too. After Kathrins sleepless night with earpain we’re unfortunately forced to leave our paradise campside, instead we’re offered to move to a nice cabin in Dereks garden. After two nights in the softest bedcover we ever experienced in all travels Kathrin is back in good health. Just in time for new years eve. For this occasion, more friends of Derek have arrived and we get to know a bunch of nice and interesting people. We spend the turn of the year with our new friends at the only in the area. The jungle sleep rhythm and the cuba libre bring us after some good dancing to our knees and we leave already at 2pm…. yea yea, we’re not getting younger.

It’s time to pack and head towards San Jose. Our freinds Julia and Holger are awaiting us and will adopt Frida to take her back to Baja California. We’re supposed to pick them up at the airport. Once more, thinks don’t come as we imagine and the brakes fail. Fortunatelly we notice early enough to pull over. The rest of the road to Alajuala we drive by tow truck. We drop Frida at the mechanic and take our bags to go and pick up our friends. It’s the third time we catch up with them on this journey and as always, there are a lot of stories to tell.

Frida’s parts are easy to find and after only a few hours she’s ready for the road. Next thing on the „to do“ list is visiting customs. The temporary import licence for the car needs to be tranfered to Julia and Holger. According to the custom agent at the entry boarder from Nicaragua an easy matter… but not in San Jose. We leave the autorities office at the airport customs quite frustrated and with a little desperation after beeing told that it’s not that easy. Our last chance is now driving back to the boarder and give it another try. Allright, it’s not the two relaxed days at the beach to finish the time in Costa Rica but a roadtrip to the boarder through halft the country. Once arrived at the boarder, everythings goes just easy and we’re out after less than half an hour with our new papers. You can imagine how releaved we are and there is even the time left for a side trip to the beach of Avellanas close to Tamarindo. The sea shows herself from the quitest site bot anyway it’s good to get wet.

Shorts and T-Shirts and packed away, the worn out flip flops thrown away. After a long time we put on pants, longsleeves, socks, shoes, beanies and jackets. We say good bye to Frida, Julia and Holger and wish them a likewise nice, adventurous and versatile journey back to Baja, Mexico.

So verbringen wir auch Weihnachten – Ganz idyllisch und alleine, schon fast kitschig am Lagerfeuer, Shrimps auf dem Grill und ein lebendiger Dschungel der uns umgibt. Bis auf dass uns die Familie abbgeht, für uns beide das schönste Weihnachten das wir jemals erlebt haben. Unser Geschenk war der Ort schlechthin und der perfekte Surf.

This place is just fantastic. Matapalo is located half an hour away from Puerto Jimenez in the Costa Rican jungle. There is already quite some people that sattled down out here, mostly „gringos“ but the properties are relatively well integrated in the landscape, some you don’t even see… The beaches are completely prestine with no buildings. There are plenty of nice accomodation possibilities but they also have their price. After a little accident while crossing with an other car on the narrow road which results in a broken window and more expenses we decide to camp on the beach.

That’s also how we spend Christmas – Idyllic, by ourselves, with shrimps on the barbie and a living jungle surrounding us, just perfect. Except for that we miss our families, for both of us the nicest Christmas we have ever had. Our presents where the moment itself and the perfect surf we had.

Einmal mehr ist nur surfen angesagt, bis uns nach ein paar Tagen langsam die Kraft ausgeht. Auf der Suche nach einem Surf Bikini für die Kathrin (einen der hält und man nicht nach dem Spülgang halb nackt da steht) entdecken wir einen kleinen Shop wo Bikinis nach Wunsch angefertigt werden. Abmessen, Stoff und Schnittwahl und zwei Tage später ist der perfekt Surf Bikini fertig.

Nach ungefähr einer Woche wird uns der Alltag zu einseitig und wir brechen auf. An der nächsten Tankstelle, stellt einer der Tankwächter zu unserem Glück fest, dass wir viel Wasser verlieren. OK, gleich ab zum nächsten Mechaniker. Es stellt sich heraus, dass Frida’s Blasenschwäche  auf eine defekte Wasserkühlpumpe zurück zu führen ist. Ja, und jetzt geht der Spass erst richtig los. Wo kriegen wir das Teil für ein Amerikanisches Auto her, wo die Japaner doch am meisten verbereitet sind. Drei ganze Tage verbringen wir in der Werkstatt, im Bus und bei Ersatzteilhändlern. Zu unserem erstaunen wird das Auto dann am vierten Tag doch noch fertig. Wir hatten Glück, sowas kann sich hier schon Mal ein bis zwei Wochen ziehen.

Frida ist wieder in Top Form, also nehmen wir gleich die 4×4 Strasse nach Malpais. Neben ein paar Flussbett Überquerungen ist der erste Teil der Strecke eigentlich ziemlich unspektakulär. Je weiter wir fahren, desto schmaler, holpriger und ausgewaschener wird die Strasse. Die Flussbetten werden tiefer und breiter, die Lanschaften werden unberührter und noch schöner. Fast in Malpais angekommen bringen wir Frida dann doch noch ziemlich ans Limit. Mit dem Vierrad Antrieb kommen wir zwar überall hoch, doch ist das Fahrwerk doch ziemlich tief und grössere Gräben sind nur schwer ohne Aufsetzen zu bewältigen.

Wir übernachten in der etwas kleineren, aber auch sehr touristeschen Surf City Sta. Teresa. Die erste Surf Session war kurz, da sich Niculin bereits in der ersten Welle das Board ins Kinn rammt. Bis auf ein paar kleine Schrammen und eine Wochen Schmerzen beim Kauen ist nicht viel passiert, das Board hat die grössere Schramme abbekommen. Den nächsten Boarddoktor finden zwei Tage später in Playa Hermosa. Chino, ein ganz netter junger Tico bringt das Board wieder auf Vordermann.

Der Surf Report und die noch ruhigere Zeit vor Weihnachten lassen den Momment gerade Ideal erscheinen um nach Panama zu fahren. Nach viel Fahrerei erreichen wir spät Abends mit einem Speed Boot Bocas del Torro. Obwohl der Ort eigentlich ganz schön ist, wurden unsere Erwartungen diesmal leider nicht erfüllt. Es regnet, keine Wellen, viele Touristen und irgendwie dreht sich alles nur ums Geld ausgeben. Fazit – Abfahrt.

Auf dem Weg zurück nach San Jose nehmen wir noch drei sympathische Sardinier mit, sie haben zumindest Wellen technisch in Boacas mehr Glück gehabt.

Wir wachen in einem komplett verregneten Dominical auf, das Meer schaut aus wie Kaba (für Schweizer Ovomaltine), das Zimmer ist feucht und grausig. Ab nach Matapalo.

After the boarder crossing we arrive the same night in Tamarindo in the northern province of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The little village has developed over the years to a little surf city and lost unfortunatelly simultaniously a bit of its pristine charme. What didn’t change are the several surf breaks that are all easy accessable by car. At the place of two Swiss Grils we find a nice studio for a moderate price. Another thing that didn’t change in Tamarindo are the yelling monkeys, they come and go, eat, yell, shit and chill, what a life.

Once more it’s all about surfing until we’re burned out after a few days. Searching for a surf bikini for Kathrin (one who doesn’t leave you naked after each tumble), we find a little custom bikini shop. We measure, choose fabric and pattern and two days later, Kate has her perfekt surf bikini.

After one week dalily life is starting to be repetitive and we feel again like moving on. It’s at the petrol station, where fortunatelly the attendant notices the water loss of our car. We go straight to the next mechanic, his diagnostic, broken water pump. Well and then the fun starts, three days of waiting around the garage, taking busses and visiting part retailers in Liberia. To our estonishment, the forth day the car is ready. We where lucky, such a thing could take easely 1-2 weeks down here.

Frida’s back in shape, ready for the 4wheel drive track to Malpais. The first part is besides some river crossings not very spectacular but than further we drive, than narrower, bumpyer and more washed out the road gets. The river crossings get wider and deeper and the landscapes are more untouched and natural. Allmost arrived in Malpais, we get Frida deffinetely to her limit. The four wheel drive gets us up every hill but nevertheless the suspension is low and passing some of the „canyons“ is almost impossible without hitting the ground.

We spend the night in Sta. Teresa, another little surf city on the pacific coast. The first surf session is short, though Nic rams into his chin on his very first wave. Besites a few little cuts and a week of chewing pain nothing not much happened, the board got the bigger ding. The next board doctor is found in Playa Hermosa. Chino a nice young Tico does a great job.

The surf report and the quite time before Christmas look quite promissing so we decide to head over to Bocas del Torro in Panama. After a long drive and a speed boat trip in the dark we arrive on the island. Allthough the place is quite nice, it didn’t fullfill our expectations. It’s raining and the surf is flat. The whole place is quite touristy and it seams like everything is just about spending money…. well than,  back to Costa Rica.

On the way back to San Jose, we pick up some funny Italian guys from Sardenia, they have been more lucky than we have with the waves and scored some nice perfect peelig overhead waves.

We wake up in a completely rainy Dominical, the ocean looks like a hot chocolate, the rooms is humid and moldy. Time for Matapalo.

If you grew up in the snow it’s hart to get in the christmas mood without the cold temperatures, the hot wine and the snow. Brrr… it’s gona be cold when we get home.
We’ll spend christmas in the jungle of Matapalo in Costa Rica. Sourrounded by yelling monkeys, snakes, heaps of lizzards and huge turtles… see ya soon…

Noch am gleichen Tag erreichen wir El Zonte, ein kleines Dörfchen nahe der Stadt La Libertad, El Salvador. Der Ort wurde uns bereits von unserem Holländischen Freund Arthur in Indonesien wärmstens empfohlen. Danke. Ein Traumhaft schöner Ort. In der kleinen Unterkunft Olas Permanentes, gleich am Strand lassen Jorge und seine Schwester Claudia keine Wünsche offen. Jorge kümmert sich um den Surf und die Claudia ums leibliche Wohl. Mit dem Surf vor der Haustüre macht Kathrin weiter riesige Fortschritte. Ach ja, wer auch immer von euch jemals nach El Salvador kommt, ihr müsst das einheimsche Gericht „popusas“, oder so ähnlich unbedingt kosten, ist der reine Wahnsinn.

Honduras und Nicaragua durchfahren wir ebenfalls im Schnelldurchlauf. Obwohl Nicaragua sich zum surfen viel versprechend angehört hatte finden wir leider keine Wellen, der Swell ist zu klein. Wir haben uns im vornherein bereits geeinigt, die Tage ohne Swell mit Fahren zu verbringen. Nach kurzem Anblick aus der ferne lassen wir ebenfalls die Touristenattraktion, die Vulkan Insel Ometepe in Nicaragua aus. Der Gedanke, das Auto mit all unseren Sachen im Hafen stehen zu lassen und mit der Fähre auf die Insel zu kommen scheint uns doch ein bisschen riskant.

Alle Grenzübergänge, bis Costa Rica, im Ganzen sechs, sind einwandfrei abgelaufen und bis auf ein paar Stunden Wartezeiten sehr easy über die Bühne gegangen. Das einzig anstrengende dabei ist, sich die vielen „tramites“ vom Hals zu schaffen. Tramites sind Einheimische die ein paar Dollar damit verdienen, Touristen durch alle Zollinstanzen zu begleiten. Ihr könnt euch ungefähr vorstellen wie hartnäckig die sein können, wenn täglich maximal zehn Touristen die Grenze passieren.

Weitaus anstrengender und seit Monaten die ersten Zwischenfälle die uns richtig wütend machen sind die Polizeikontrollen, speziell in Honduras und Nicaragua. Wir waren es ja gewohnt, bereits in Mexico täglich 1-5 Mal kontrolliert zu werden, doch beschränkte sich dies auf das vorzeigen der Pässe und einem netten Wortaustausch. Hier hingegen, wollen sie alle Dokumente sehen die es ungefähr gibt und dazu sollen im Auto noch 2 Pannen Dreiecke und ein Feuerlöscher vorhanden sein. Haben wir natürlich nicht … sprich – wir zaaaaaaaaaahlen. Auf der Suche nach zwei Warndreiecken und einem Feuerlöscher treffen wir natürlich weitere Polizeikontrollen. Unser angewöhnter scherzender Umgang mit den Beamten ist verflogen und wir zeigen ihnen deutlich, dass wir keinen Cent Schmiergeld mehr bezahlen – mit Erfolg. Nach langem Suchen finden wir ein Tag später bei einem Strassenhändler das notwendige Notfallpaket, welches mit Sicherheit nur von Touristen verlangt wird. Die Weiterfahrt nach Costa Rica verläuft Stressfrei.

Boarder crossings, police checks, bribes, nice landscapes, an amazing El Salvador and many kilometres…. to name some of the highlights of the last few weeks. After arriving and staying for the night in Guatemala we head straight south to the next border. It’s kind of ironic after having been travelling for almost a year but unfortuanately we don’t have the time to explore all countries and we have to pic a few favorites. The things we’ll remember from Guatemala are the elaborate stitching of the traditional clothing of the women and the impressive mounatin landscapes we crossed.

At the same day we arrive in El Zonte, a little surfers village close to the town of La Libertad, El Salvador. We found the place again on a sheet of paper with the best hints for Central America from our Dutch friend Arthur we met in Indonesia. A great and layed back place. Our small lodge is called Olas Permanentes, right on the beach. Jorge and his sister Claudia are doing their possible to fullfill all our wishes. Jorge is the surf guide and Claudia rules the kitchen. Once more Kathrin makes huge progress on the fun break right in front of our doorstep. Whoever of you will visit El Salvador in the future, you’ll have to try the „popusas“, a delicous local meal.

We cross Honduras and Nicaragua as fast as we did already Guatemala. Although Nicaragua is well known for good surf, the swell is missing. Since we decided to spend the time the ocean is flat with driving and surf when the swell is on, we drive on. After a short check from the distance we also skip the tourist attraction lake Ometepe with it’s two volcanos, we just wouldn’t relax knowing our car is in the harbour with all our luggage.

All the boarder crossings, all in all six, went except of some hours waiting in line unexpected easy. The only anoying thing about are the „tramites“ who offer their service to bring you easy through all the paperwork that has to be done. The fact that there is only a maximum of 10 tourist crossing some boarder daily make them even more insisting.

By far the worst experiance we had and the first happenings that made us realy angry since monthswhere the police checks, specially in Honduras and Nicaragua. We where used to beeing checked daily about 1-5 times but the checks where limited on showing the passports and some fun chats. But since we are in Honduras, the checks changed, they started asking for all existing papers, warning triangles and fire extinguisher. Of course we did not have such… which means – you pay. Serching for the missing safety equipment we cross of course other police inspections. Our funny way to converse with the autorities evaporates and we get quite furious – showing them clearly we won’t pay any cent more bribes. With success and we can drive on. After a long search we finally find our emergency package, which for sure is only commandatory to tourist, at the street market.

The rest of the way to Costa Rica is again relaxed.

„Im Leben geht es nicht nur ums surfen“, meint Kathrin. Also, jetzt ist Kulturprogramm angesagt. Da das Meer gerade flach ist, ist Niculin diesmal leicht zu überzeugen. Kurz nach einbruch der Dunkelheit, erreichen wir die eher touristische aber sehr charmante kleine Bergstadt. Wir stellen gleich fest, das wir die einzigen mit Shorts sind… , es ist ganz schön frisch. Die Gesichter der Menschen haben sich ebenfalls geändert, wie auch Hautfarbe und die Grösse tragen sie die deutlichen Züge der Indios. Ihr Gesichtsaudruck verrät, dass ihnen die Eingliderung in die moderne Konsumgesellschaft nicht ganz einfach fällt.

Das Maya Medizin Museum gibt uns einen Einblick über die verschiedenen Medizin Männern&Frauen, wie die einheimischen Kinder geboren werden und welche Heilmittel die Natur bereit hält.

Dank der grosse Kaffeetradition vom Bundesstaat Chiapas, hat es naütrlich auch an jeder 2 Strassenecke ein nettes kleines Kaffee Haus bester Qualität. – eine Genuss in Kulturprogramm Pausen.

Ganze drei Nächte verbringen wir auf dem Hochplateau bevor wir bei Tagesanbruch weiterreisen. Wir möchten auf der Strecke nach Guatemala noch die bekannte Maya Stadt Palenque besichtigen. Wir stellen schnell fest, dass wir das bei diesem Wetter und Verkehr nie und niemals in einem Tag schaffen, doch wieder ein bisschen viel vorgenommen. An der Strassenbeschilderung entdecken wir eine zweite Maya Anlage, die einen weniger grossen Umweg mit sich bringt. Auf nach „Tonina“ wo uns Angel (ausgesprochen: Anchel) in die Rituale der Mayas einführt. Er ist seit Anbeginn der Ausgrabungsarbeiten dabei und scheint vieles zu wissen. Die Anlage ist gewaltig, und angeblich sind gerade Mal 30% augegraben.

Auf dem weiteren Weg Richtung Grenze durchqueren wir wunderschöne Landschaften die uns stark an Zuhause erinnern. Tannenwälder, Seen und haufenweise Kühe auf den grünen Weiden. Fast hätten wir ein bisschen Heimweh bekommen. Der Grenzübergang mit den ganzen Formalitäten für eine temporäre Einfuhr des Autos und Immigration verläufen unerwartet schnell und reibungslos. Und schon sind wir in Guatemal.

After a beautiful time in Nexpa we continue our roadtrip with two stops in Chicauah and Puerto Escondido into the mountains. San Cristobal is a little town at an altitude of over 2000 meters.

“Life is not only about surfing”, says Kathrin. So – time for some culture program. Though the ocean looks quite flat at the moment, even Niculin is fine with that. Just after dusk we arrive in the touristy and quite charming little town. We are the only ones walking around in shorts, it’s quite chilly. Not only the landscape but also the faces of the people have changed. The Indios are way more present here than anywhere else we’ve been in Mexico. Their expression reveals the struggel they had and still have to integrate in the modern consumer society.

In the Maya museum we learn more about all kinds of medicine man&women, how they gave birth to their children and all kinds of drugs the nature offers.

Thanks to the coffee tradition in the state Chiapas, every secound block has a coffee house. A welcome break from the sightseeing.

We spend three full days on the plateau before we leave early morning. On the way to Guatemala we’d like to visit the famous Maya town Palenque. It doesn’t take long and we realize that with the actual weather and traffic conditions there is no way we could arrive at the boarding before nightfall. Plan change, we visit the smaller Maya Town Tonina. It’s half as far, less crowded, and we can still make it to Guatemala. We hire the local guide Angel who has been working in the excavation since the beginning. The site is enormous and apperently all we’ve seen is about 30% of what they still hope to excavate.

On the way to the boarder we cross some beautiful landscapes that resemble much the ones back home. Pine forests, lakes and heaps of cows on the pasture. We almost felt a bit homesick, almost. The boarder crossing was unexpected easy and all the paperwork for importing the car temporarily and immigration went really smooth. And there we are in Guatemala.

Wir nehmen die Fähre in La Paz, Baja und queren die See von Cortez nach Mazatlan. 12 Stunden dauert die Nachtfahrt, die meiste Zeit schlafen wir. In Mazatlan ankeommen machen wir uns gleich auf den Weg Richtung Süden. Wir haben keine Zeit zu verschenken. In knappen 7 Wochen fliegen wir von Panama nach New York und dann nach Hause. Plan ist eigentlich in Puerto Vallarta zu übernachten. Kurz davor machen wir aber einen Abstecher um das kleine Surfer Dörfchen Sayulita zu sehen. Ganz fasziniert bleiben wir gleich dort für eine Nacht. Nach einem Morgen mini-Surf geht die Reise gleich weiter.

Nächstes Ziel ist „La Ticla“. Unterwegs decken wir uns mit dem notwendigsten zum campen ein. In La Ticla angekommen, sind wir ganz überrascht wie angenehm der Strand für Camping ausgerichtet ist. Ein grosses Palmwedel Dach überdeckt die Stellplätze und sorgt ganztägig für Schatten, bei der Mittagssonne ganz willkommen. Die Wellen sind klein und laufen nicht ganz so sauber wie die Bilder im Surfguide darstellen. Dennoch haben wir zwei Tage richtig viel Spass im Wasser.

Bereits seit Mazatlan befinden wir uns auf der Mex200, in Reiseführern als die schönste Küstenstrasse Mexicos erwähnt. Dichter Jungle links und rechts, haufenweise Leguane und Taranteln die, die Strasse überqueren, steile Felsklippen mit wunderschönen Aussichten und einsame Sandstrände – um nur ein paar Fassetten der kurvenreichen Strecke auf zu zählen.

Nach kurzer Weiterfahrt erreichen wir auch schon unser nächstes Ziel – Nexpa. Eine der bekanntesten Wellen Mexicos. Das Lineup fesselt und augenblicklich. Die Wellen laufen sauber und ewig lang. Genau die richtige Grösse und Länge um Forstschritte zu machen. Wir richten uns gleich am Strand unsere kleine Hütte ein und stürzen uns in die Wellen.

The ferry in La Paz, Baja, take us accross the sea of Cortez to Mazatlan. Most of the 12 hours night crossing we spend sleeping. Once arrived in Mazatlan we hit the road streight away south. There is no time to miss, 7 weeks are left before we fly home from Panama, with a stopover in New York for a few days. The plan is to sleep in Puerto Vallarta. Just before we arrive we decide to stop bye the little surf town of Sayulita. Fascinated of the charme of the place we decide to stay for the night. After a mini surf session in the morning we leave again.

Next stop, La Ticla. On the way we buy just the essential for camping. Once arrived in La Ticla, we’re both surprised by how well everything is already set up for camping surfers. A high „palappa“ gives shade to the camping ground, a welcome roof in the noon sun. The waves are small and don’t peel as nice as shown in the surf guide. Anyway we spend some hours in the water with great fun.

Since we left Mazatlan we drive on the Mex200, mentioned in travel guides as the nicest coast highway in all Mexico. Thick jungle right and left, plenty of iguanas and tarantula who cross the road, steep rocky coastlines and some amazing views over deserted beaches, just to mention some aspects of the coast highway.

A short drive take us to Nexpa. One of Mexicos most famous Surf Spots. The lineup faszinates us instantly. 3 feet clean south swell, the waves peel glassy and promise some long rides. Exactly the right size and length to make prosgress and have lots of fun. We get all things organized in our little beach house and jump into the water.
